Zone out

Meaning

To lose focus and stop paying attention — to mentally drift away, often without realizing it's happening.

Example

"I completely zoned out during the last 20 minutes of the meeting — I have no idea what was decided."

Conversation questions

  • When are you most likely to zone out? Is it a particular type of situation or time of day?
  • What strategies do you use to stop yourself from zoning out when focus matters?

Snap out of

Meaning

To suddenly stop being in a distracted, negative, or unproductive mental state — to shake yourself back to action.

Example

"He was overthinking it so much that his manager had to tell him to snap out of it and just make a call."

Conversation questions

  • Do you find it easy to snap out of a negative mood, or does it tend to linger?
  • What's the most effective thing someone can say or do to help you snap out of a funk?

Come to terms with

Meaning

To gradually accept something difficult, painful, or unwanted — to reach a point of peace with a reality you can't change.

Example

"She's still coming to terms with the decision to leave her job — she knows it was right, but it's not easy."

  • Is there anything you're currently trying to come to terms with?

Dwell on

Meaning

To spend too much time thinking or worrying about something — usually something negative or in the past.

Example

"There's no point dwelling on what went wrong — the decision's been made and we need to move forward."

Conversation questions

  • Are you someone who tends to dwell on mistakes, or do you let them go easily?
  • When does reflecting on something become dwelling on it?

Tune out

Meaning

To deliberately stop paying attention to something — to mentally block it out in order to focus elsewhere.

Example

"After a while, you learn to tune out the background noise and focus on what actually matters."

Conversation questions

  • What things do you tune out in daily life to protect your focus or peace of mind?
  • Is there a downside to tuning out — things you might be missing by switching off?

Wrap your head around

Meaning

To fully understand something that is complex, strange, or surprising — to mentally process and make sense of it.

Example

"I'm still trying to wrap my head around how fast everything shifted — it's a lot to process."

  • Is there something happening in the world right now that you're still trying to wrap your head around?
  • What's the most complex idea or situation you've ever had to wrap your head around?
