Third Conditional
An imaginary past situation and its imaginary past result. Neither the condition nor the result actually happened.
Mixed Conditionals
A past condition with a present result, or a present condition about a past situation.
Meaning
To lose an opportunity or fail to experience something valuable.
Example
"If I hadn't taken that job, I would have missed out on some of the best experiences of my life."
Conversation questions
- Is there something you're glad you didn't miss out on? What would have happened if you had?
- Have you ever missed out on something important because of fear or hesitation?
Meaning
To complete what you started or committed to doing.
Example
"If I had followed through on my original plan, things would have turned out very differently."
Conversation questions
- Is there something you wish you had followed through on?
- If you had followed through on an early ambition, where do you think you would be now?
Meaning
To obstruct or interfere with something — a goal, a relationship, a process.
Example
"If my insecurities hadn't got in the way of things, I would have applied much sooner."
Conversation questions
- What has got in the way of something you wanted? How do you feel about it now?
- If you could stop one thing from getting in the way of your goals, what would it be?
Meaning
To restrain yourself or suppress what you feel or want to do.
Example
"If I hadn't held back so much, I think I would have made more of an impact."
Conversation questions
- Is there a moment when you held back — and wish you hadn't?
- If you hadn't held back in a particular situation, what would have happened?
Meaning
To use a situation or opportunity as well as possible — to get the maximum out of it.
Example
"If I had made the most of that year abroad, my language skills would be so much stronger now."
Conversation questions
- Looking back, is there an opportunity you wish you had made the most of?
- Are you currently making the most of where you are in life? What could you be doing more of?
Meaning
To think about a past experience — often with a certain feeling about it now.
Example
"If I hadn't gone through that, I wouldn't be able to look back on it with gratitude."
Conversation questions
- Is there something you look back on differently now than you did at the time?
- What do you hope to look back on at the end of your life with the most pride?
Choices & Regrets
- If you had made a different decision at one key moment, how would your life be different now?
- Is there something you wish you had done sooner? What stopped you at the time?
- If you had followed through on something you once gave up on, where do you think you would be?
Alternate History
- If you had grown up in a completely different country or culture, how might you be different?
- If you had met certain people earlier in life, how would things have changed?
- If your biggest obstacle hadn't got in the way of your plans, what would you have achieved?
Lessons Learned
