Relative Clauses

Describing People, Places & Things That Matter

Relative clauses add information to a noun — defining exactly what you mean, or adding extra detail. Mastering them lets you speak in longer, more precise, and more natural-sounding sentences.

Grammar Focus

Defining vs. non-defining — and which pronoun to use.

Relative pronouns

who For people — "The person who stood out the most was my first manager."
which For things and ideas — "The book, which I came across by accident, changed how I think."
that For people or things (defining only) — "The thing that I identify with most is creativity."
where For places — "The city where I grew up barely exists as I remember it."
whose For possession — "She's someone whose opinion I really value."

Defining vs. Non-defining

Defining

Specifies which one — the clause is essential. No commas.

"People who fit in easily often don't realise how lucky they are."

Non-defining

Adds extra information — the clause can be removed. Use commas.

"My grandmother, who lived to 98, always stood up for what she believed."
